The Founder

Charles Taze Russell

In the 1870s, Charles Taze Russell (1852–1916), a businessman from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, began a careful, verse-by-verse study of the Bible with a small circle of associates. Dissatisfied with creeds he believed contradicted Scripture, he sought to restore what he understood as the pure teachings of the Bible.

In 1879 he began publishing Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence, and the study groups that gathered around this work became the foundation of the modern movement. Russell devoted his life and resources to the public preaching and publishing of Bible truth until his death in 1916.

The Bible Study Group

A small group of sincere students in Allegheny, Pennsylvania began an intensive, verse-by-verse examination of the Scriptures, seeking to return to the pure teachings of the Bible, free from creeds and traditions.

1879

Zion's Watch Tower

Charles Taze Russell began publishing Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence — a monthly journal devoted to the discussion of Bible truth, distributed to readers across the growing brotherhood.

1931

A Name Is Embraced

The organization adopted the distinctive name 'Jehovah's Witnesses,' drawn from Isaiah 43:10, affirming their role as witnesses to the sovereignty and name of the Creator.

1950s

The New World Translation

A fresh translation of the Holy Scriptures was commissioned and released progressively, restoring the divine name Jehovah to its place in the text and making the Bible accessible in modern language.

Today

A Worldwide Brotherhood

Millions of Witnesses in over 200 lands gather in more than 100,000 congregations, united by a shared ministry, Bible education, and the public preaching of the good news of God's Kingdom.

Core Pillars

What they study, what they believe.

Four pillars uphold the faith and practice of Jehovah's Witnesses — each a foundation for a life devoted to God and to one another.

The Bible

The inspired Word of God is the foundation of all belief and conduct. Witnesses study it deeply — individually, in families, and in congregations — allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture.

The Ministry

A public, door-to-door and worldwide preaching work, fulfilling the commission to declare the good news of God's Kingdom in all the inhabited earth.

The Brotherhood

A united, international family bound by love rather than coercion — no hierarchy of clergy, no divisions of race or nation, all members equal before God.

The Standard

High moral standards in conduct, entertainment, and relationships; neutrality in political and military conflicts; and a reputation for honesty, kindness, and peace.
